Financial Tips for COVID-19
April 21st, 2020
With many of us spending more time at home, we’ve had more time to think about our finances and how that affects us and our families. So, what can we do to reduce anxiety if we’re unable to pay our bills? Here are a few areas to look at:
- File for unemployment as soon as possible. Those that were laid off due to the virus can be eligible for an additional $600 per week in unemployment benefits.
- Plant seeds for food! In the last several weeks my family has planted numerous beans, herbs, tomatoes and this can be done even within an apartment. You can control your food supply to a certain level, plus the benefit of seeing life grow right in front of you can be healing and personally satisfying. One of our clients saved $50 a week by growing their own produce.
- Under qualifying circumstances by calling xfinity at 800-934-6489 and asking for, Internet Essentials, they will provide internet at $9.95 monthly. Also, xfinity will work with you to lower your bill or package despite being in a contract. Go through the same 800 number's phone menu and ask for disconnecting your service, which gets you to their “Customer Loyalty” department to obtain a better value in your services.
- Fred Meyer delivers groceries for a fee of $9.95 if you don't have reliable transportation or are worried about going out in public.
- If you do own a car, and feel safe picking up groceries for a friend or close neighbor, they may offer a service in return.
- Also, many insurers are reducing their car insurance premiums. If your auto insurer has not reduced your rate, contact them to request this as the number of miles you’re driving has most likely reduced.
- Prioritize paying your bills. Focus on the essentials first, then if you are unable to pay the others call the provider and let them know your situation. It’s better to communicate with them and come up with a realistic payment plan as they have a vested interest in getting their money in the future.
In these times small acts of kindness can sometimes make an uncomfortable situation more comforting. Many of us are looking for the close connections that we’ve lost since we’re more isolated. Life will eventually get back to a more normal state despite these uncertain times. As we know, nothing lasts forever, and better times will return. Also, remember to focus on what can you do, instead of what can’t you do!
